An RVing first we could have done without....

It had to happen someday, we knew it would. I guess with five years on the road we've been lucky to escape it this long. The first instance was a couple of weeks ago. I went to pull out our griddle to cook something and noticed the disposable shop towel I had laying over the top of it (to prevent scratches) was shredded up into pieces. There were also pieces of a paper towel...I still don't know where that came from.

Pulling things out of the cabinet we quickly realized we had a stowaway, obviously trying to build a nest in where it was warm. We cleaned things up and Stu went out for bait and the big guns - a mouse trap. He set it up with some peanut butter and within an hour we had our first victim.

We disposed of the remains and reset the trap. No go. I set off the trap and asked Stu to move it to a different spot where I'd be less apt to trip it. Soon it was apparent that our stowaway was also a runaway, living the solo life.

We did discover that he had traveled a little further when I pulled out my bag of pasta for dinner. Yup, he liked pasta and had had a banquet. Trashed the bag and put pasta on our shopping list.

This was a month ago and all has been quiet...no traps tripped, no signs of all of other intruders. Of course if they were along for the ride from TN to FL, they probably headed for the beach as soon as we parked.

Yesterday I was storing some things under the bed, moving things around and just generally rearranging them. I picked up a couple of bags and found a pile of cough drops and a couple of mouse turds. "What the heck? Did I store some under here and the bag broke?" I thought.

Then I went to my side of the bed where I have a small basket to stash things. One thing is a snack size bag for my cough drops to take care of middle of the night coughs. The bag was empty! That little bugger had moved every cough drop (almost 2 dozen) from my side of the bed, underneath to the front opposite side. Never ate one, only unwrapped one. Guess he was afraid he was going to get a cold from us humans. Jeesh!

  1. Ugh, don't like those little critters. Lol, guess he didn't like the taste of his stash of cough drops.

  2. If you like the smell of peppermint, get some peppermint oil (you can get it online), some cotton balls and put just a couple drops on each. Stow the peppermint cotton balls in the tiny hideaway spots (like where your cough drops were!) and it will deter the little buggers! They don't like peppermint! We do this when we winterized the motor home since finding little turds the first winter we had our motor home. Not a little turd since!

  3. You're telling me that in 5 years RVing you havent had a critter?? We had one a few months out. Havent had one in a year or so now. They are a Pain in the Ass! I put a picture of our critter caught in the mouse trap on our blog. I got in some trouble from my sister for that!

  4. Coincidence or what ?? I had my 'first' two nights ago. Problem with me is that I have a HUGE phobia !! Thing went off in the middle of the night - got it but didn't kill it - so therefore it was making quite the noise and Bennie was freaking.

Fellow RV neighbours set it up for me and told me to call them - didn't matter if it was the middle of the night. I did !! I've been having panic attacks since. Sure hope it was the first and LAST !!

  5. I absolutely hate mice! I hate cleaning up and sterilizing everything after they've been around. Trouble is that when we stay at the ranch, they like to come visit...

  6. If "nesting" does that mean HE is a SHE so where is Daddy?

  7. It's that time of year again. After our mousie incident last year, Dave plugged up all holes underneath the rig with expandable foam and others with steel wool. I'm still holding my breath (well, figuratively) so far this year . . . maybe the feral cats on the property are helping . . .

  8. Ugh -- I hate it when those guys show up. But, the mouse trap you show works the best for us. We have had 3 episodes and it works every time...

  9. that is too funny. . .we seem to get a mouse or mice each time we stay at my Dad's place. . .only last time we got a "rat". . .it kept springing the mouse traps. . .finally had to use DCon to get rid of it. . .not fun!

Loved the cough drop story. . .

  10. So far so good for us but we had mice in the sticks and bricks. I was not a happy person. Thank goodness Jim is good about getting rid of them for me.

  11. You'll get it under control soon I'm sure. It happens to all of us at some point!

  12. Get Mouse Hotels from Lowes. It is a clear plastic box. Mouse goes in after the peanut butter and he goes to sleep from lack of oxygen. Throw box away (already in casket). No dealing with the "Snap" and undoing him.

  13. Yuck!! We had a problem this summer while in Oregon. It was almost the end of my rving days...and we only started in March!!! I came real close to sleeping in the car. I felt badly for Steve, he was doing everything possible to get rid of "them". The motorhome has been in Las Vegas while we've been here in Florida. I just hope we don't have issues when we go back!

  14. Wow, two mouse blog reads in a row. We always keep bait in out of the way places. Have not had a problem since we started to do that.

  15. Being "newbies", Jerry and I were told to put dryer sheets in all our drawers, cabinets and in the basement and compartments underneath our rig. Replace them every couple of months or so. Apparently mice cannot stand the smell of them! The couple who told us this tip has never had a mouse in their RV when they follow their own advice :).

  16. Go get a bunch of Irish Spring and put an unopened box in each bay and other places if needed.

  17. We have been VERY fortunate...two campers in 11 years and we have not had mice (knocking on wood!). We have done the dryer sheet trick, putting it any access points that we can find, and that has worked well for us.

  18. We have been lucky so far - no mice. However this last summer we sure were fighting with stinkbugs.
